美國近來發生多起警員槍殺手無寸鐵民眾的事件，引發「警方使用武器防衛過當」的質疑，更進而在各地掀起多樁示威暴力衝突。

《華盛頓郵報》5月30日報導，美國警方今年前5個月開槍致死的案例達385人，平均每天有逾2人喪命，死者尤以無武裝的非洲裔居多。

這個死亡率是美國政府過去7年來統計的2倍以上。聯邦調查局（FBI）的紀錄顯示，2008年迄今，警方基於維護公民人身安全或正當自我防衛，開槍射殺嫌犯的案例每年約有400起，平均每天1.1人。FBI的數據本於全國近1萬7000個警察機構的自發性通報，官員承認，數據可能不盡完整。

針對美國警察今年值勤時開槍致死事件，華郵爬梳警方報告、地方媒體報導並佐以訪談後，發現2015年截至5月29日，遭警方槍擊者的致死率直逼平均每天2.6人。

據華郵統計與分析，在命喪警槍的385人中，365人為男性、20人為女性，其中白人占近半，另半數是少數族裔，案發時死者泰半持有械彈，但有6分之1只是持玩具手槍或全無武裝。至於手無寸鐵的死者，有3分之2是非裔或西班牙語裔。

至於死者年齡，則介於16至83歲，25至34歲者有118人，35至44歲者94人，18歲以下者8人。而有92名死者遭判定罹患心理疾病。
